Unrefined Grade A Nigerian shea butter in export packaging

Shea butter is one of Africa's most versatile exports — used globally in cosmetics, skincare, haircare, food and pharmaceuticals. But not all shea butter is the same. Understanding the difference between grades, and specifying the right one for your application, is critical to product performance and consumer satisfaction. This guide explains the grades and how to choose.

What Is Shea Butter?

Shea butter is a fat extracted from the nuts of the shea tree (Vitellaria paradoxa), native to West Africa. Nigeria is one of the world's largest producers. The butter is rich in vitamins A, E and F, and contains essential fatty acids that make it highly effective as a moisturiser, emollient and anti-inflammatory agent.

Grade A vs Grade B vs Refined

  • Grade A (unrefined): Extracted using traditional methods, unbleached and unfiltered beyond basic cleaning. Retains the natural vitamins, colour and characteristic nutty aroma. FFA typically ≤ 3%. The preferred grade for premium cosmetics.
  • Grade B (unrefined): Similar extraction process but slightly higher FFA (3–5%) and more colour variation. Suitable for mass-market skincare products, soaps and haircare.
  • Grade C (unrefined): Higher FFA (5–10%), often used for industrial applications, soap-making and further refining.
  • Refined shea butter: Chemically processed to remove colour, odour and impurities. FFA < 0.5%. Preferred for products where a neutral base is required, such as food applications and certain cosmetics.

Key Quality Parameters

When specifying shea butter, request the following test values:

  • FFA (Free Fatty Acid): ≤ 3% for Grade A
  • Moisture: ≤ 0.2%
  • Insoluble impurities: ≤ 0.09%
  • Peroxide value: ≤ 10 mEq/kg
  • Colour (Lovibond): varies by grade

Selecting Shea Butter for Your Application

  • Premium skincare & cosmetics: Grade A unrefined — highest vitamin content, best feel on skin.
  • Mass-market soap & body care: Grade B unrefined — good performance at lower cost.
  • Food & confectionery: Refined shea butter — neutral flavour and odour.
  • Pharmaceutical: Refined or high-grade unrefined depending on formulation.

Storage & Shelf Life

Unrefined shea butter has a shelf life of approximately 18–24 months when stored in a cool, dark place in sealed containers. Refined shea butter lasts longer — up to 36 months — thanks to lower FFA content. Always specify airtight packaging for tropical shipments.

Packaging & Shipping

Standard export packaging for shea butter:

  • 25 kg food-grade plastic buckets or cartons
  • 180 kg steel drums
  • 1 MT bulk bags for large orders

Typical container loading: 18–20 MT per 20 ft FCL. Transit time to Europe 18–25 days; North America 22–30 days.
