Raw Nigerian cashew nuts sorted and graded for bulk export to Asia and Europe

Nigeria is one of Africa's top three producers of raw cashew nuts (RCN), and demand from Asian and European processors has grown steadily over the past decade. This guide explains what international buyers need to know when sourcing Nigerian RCN in bulk.

Why Nigerian Cashew Nuts?

Nigerian RCN is prized for its high kernel out-turn ratio (KOR), large nut size and clean, well-dried presentation. The country's cashew belt runs from Kogi and Benue through Oyo, Osun and Enugu, producing nuts that are mechanically dried to optimal moisture and hand-sorted for consistency — critical requirements for shellers and processors.

Key Quality Specifications

  • KOR (Kernel Out-turn Ratio): 46–52 lbs per 80 kg bag
  • Nut count: 180–200 per kg (or 170–180 for premium size)
  • Moisture: ≤ 8%
  • Defective nuts: ≤ 8%
  • Foreign matter: ≤ 1%
  • Immature nuts: ≤ 6%

What Is KOR and Why Does It Matter?

KOR — Kernel Out-turn Ratio — measures how many pounds of usable kernel can be extracted from 80 kg of raw nuts. Higher KOR means better economics for shellers. Nigerian RCN typically commands a premium when KOR is above 48 lbs, and buyers should always request an independent KOR test before contracting.

Harvest Season & Supply Calendar

Nigeria's main cashew harvest runs from February through June, with peak volumes arriving in March–May. Smaller harvests occur in the South-West later in the year. Serious buyers lock in supply contracts by January to secure top-quality lots.

What Affects Cashew Pricing?

  • Global kernel prices (India, Vietnam, Brazil)
  • KOR and nut count
  • Seasonal availability
  • Shipping costs and Incoterms
  • Order volume (FCL vs LCL)

Export Documentation

  1. Commercial Invoice and Packing List
  2. Certificate of Origin (NEPC-issued)
  3. Phytosanitary Certificate (NAQS)
  4. SGS or equivalent quality inspection (with KOR report)
  5. Bill of Lading
